2021’s five biggest health trends

a look at five health trends that have been sweeping the planet in 2021

The disruption and uncertainty unleashed by COVID-19 isn’t going to vanish the moment we all finally get a jab in our arm. We’ll still be living with many of the health issues it has left in its wake, even when lockdowns and hotel quarantines are a thing of the past.

BIBO decided to investigate 2021’s major health trends, and find some expert tips on how they can make life better.

so, what are 2021’s biggest health trends?

 1. stress awareness

It’s hardly surprising that COVID-19 has had a seismic effect on mental health. A US survey found over half of adults had been seriously traumatised by it, while UK medical researchers warned that those already suffering from depression or anxiety had been particularly badly affected.

One unexpected upside has been that putting mental health under the spotlight has further destigmatised it, meaning more people feel able to open up to others about their feelings and seek help. The term ‘mental health coffee break’ has been trending all year.

 2. a thirst for water

In 2020, the Australian government launched a campaign on the importance of drinking water and the dangers of dehydration. It warned of the health implications of sugar-filled soft drinks and advised parents to keep a jug of water within reach at all times, carry a full bottle when out and to drink plenty themselves to show children how important it is. A BIBO water bar offers instant chilled water that’s been filtered and purified so tastes delicious and contains no harmful bacteria or contaminates.

3. lockdown belly reduction

Months in lockdown or working from home hasn’t done wonders for our waistlines. Snackfoods and Chardonnay replaced salads and fresh water while home workouts took too much willpower for some, so diets saw a resurgence.

The biggest trend by far is fasting. We all know the 5:2 Diet, but many food scientists are now recommending the 10 Hour Diet where no food is consumed outside the hours of 8am and 6pm.

“Research shows this is the sweet spot," says nutritionist Jeannette Hyde, who has written a book on the subject. "Fasting for 14 hours overnight helps improve heart health, lowers blood pressure and protects against type 2 diabetes because our bodies go into repair mode. It's a gentler way to lose weight."

 4. …and chocolate!

Yes, fasting may be in, but so is the sweet, gooey stuff. It’s well known that dark chocolate that's at least 70 per cent cocoa reduces stress and inflammation, but it also helps with memory and immunity. So, what are you waiting for?!

Consumer experts Mintel have said that the likes of Dairy Milk could have a record-breaking year as tried and tested mood boosters fly off the shelves.

You can even buy bars infused with reishi mushrooms, another trusted stress reliever!

5. go climatarian!

If fasting for 14 hours before bingeing on Mars bars seems too much like hard work, then how about a 2021 health trend that’ll help you and the planet?

The Climatarian Diet isn’t only healthy, it reduces your carbon footprint. For example, if you give up beef and lamb for a year, it could save over a ton of CO² - that’s the equivalent of driving a car from Perth to Brisbane via Sydney!

If you want an easier way to help the environment, then a BIBO water bar uses less electricity than a kettle and delivers purified, filtered water without having to buy plastic bottles.
